Sand Eels (aka. Sand lance, candlefish) are a very important baitfish in the Pacific Northwest. All saltwater species will feed heavily on candlefish from the Pacific Ocean to deep within Puget Sound. The Pin Head matches the smaller candlefish and works great along the beaches for sea-run cutthroat and salmon. It is also effective for the boat angler offshore when the fish are keyed on smaller bait.

Also a critical pattern to have stashed away in the fly box for any freshwater or stillwater scenario where there is a bloom of hatching fry, typically right as waters begin to warm after the winter thaw.
