Good news, everyone!
The Upper Hoh Road is re-opening at 12:30pm tomorrow May 8, 2025
Meaning we can finally get back to exploring the Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park.
The road’s been closed for five long months, since a washout nuked it last December, but it’s fixed now and ready for you!
In case you missed it:
On December 18th 2024, a huge storm got the Hoh River all worked up from 2600 CFS (cubic feet per second) to over 27,000 in less than 24 hours.
That’s A LOT of water, very suddenly.
All of this water hit the bank and ripped out a chunk of Upper Hoh Road at milepost 9.7. The closure, which started December 23, really put a damper on getting to the Hoh Rain Forest, a spot that according to Olympic National Park got about 450,000 visitors last year. It’s been a real bummer for locals and visitors wanting to experience those glorious mossy trails.
Thanks to $623,000 in emergency funding from Governor Bob Ferguson’s Strategic Reserve Fund and $27,000 in private donations, the repairs have been completed—just in time for the summer!
We’d like to thank Jefferson County Public Works, Seton Construction, Olympic National Park, Governor Ferguson, Rep. Adam Bernbaum, the Hoh Tribe, and all who made this possible.
With the road open, you can once again access the famous Hall of Mosses Trail, take the Hoh River Trail all the way to the glacier if you dare, and check out the unique trees in the Spruce Nature Trail.
Please note the Hoh Rainforest Campground is still closed, due to fallen trees needing to get cleared and other repairs.
Also note the river is still closed to fishing until June 1
Remember there’s been many people itching to get back up there, so get up early when you go, parking is limited.
