The bottom line on ratings is that they are variable but may be used to give an idea of one or more of the following qualities.
- Hackle length
- Hackle stem strength
- Barb density
- Feather count per saddle/cape (flies tied per saddle/cape)
A #2 Metz will tie beautifully for about 95% of the folks that tie. It's that simple. Hackle quality is so much higher than 30 years ago, all grades and hackles sold by manufactures such as Metz always produce the finest of quality hackles. No matter the grade, just know #1 will be better than #3 but #3 is just fine.
