On our Olympic Peninsula rivers we use these large foam caddis flies, along with the cellophane winged
Green Drake extensively for our own fishing and for clients during the summer guiding season.
We rely heavily on these flies for clients who are young, or who might find it difficult to set up a true drag free drift in fast riffles or swirly water. Most flies are drug under and go unseen in such circumstances. You can see the fly, its a great replication of an adult Caddis, these flies ride high on the surface and so much so we often skate and buzz these flies accross the surface and do very well for our resident & Searun Cutty's.
Foam!!! it floats. you do not need to add floatant but it certainly seems to improve the float.
The caddis has a floam lip backed by a dense hackle collar that helps the fly hydro plane across the water and gives us the freedom to buzz or twitch the fly without it diving under for a swim. As long as you keep your leader from being sucked under this fly will skate beautifully!
Elk hair wing helps with buoyancy and again helps push fly to the surface when skated or buzzed
Searun, resident cutts, rainbows and Yes even Steelhead. If you asked us to pick one fly for the summer on the OP it would be the Morrish Caddis
