THE RIVERS

OVERVIEW - Well I hope everyone got their fill of winter steelheading, because it’s all over now…Most all rivers are closed until June 2nd, with the exception of the lower Sol Duc and the Quileute River.  This is a good time to hit the beaches in search of hungry sea-run cutthroat.

  Fresh Native Steelhead

SOL DUC–  The Sol Duc remains open from the mouth to the concrete pump station at the state salmon hatchery.  Anglers can expect to find a mix of early summer-run steelhead, Spring Chinook, and possibly a late winter-run. A friend of ours recently caught a Springer on a dry line and a damp caddis pattern…check out the photo!  While extremely rare, it goes to show you never know.

BOGACHIEL / CALAWAH–– Closed.

HOH– Closed.  The late season was a little tougher this year.  The added fishing pressure didn’t help things.  The lower river from the mouth to Willoughby Creek will reopen May 16th on a Wednesday through Sunday basis for Spring Chinook.

Wild Buck

ELWHA –Dam removal is underway!  You can watch the progress at this web address http://www.nps.gov/olym/photosmultimedia/elwha-river-webcams.htm. The lower river never did clear up and now the entire river will be closed for a minimum of five years.

DUNGENESS –Closed.

CREEKS –Closed.

SALTWATER:

Beach Fishing for Cutthroat

BEACHES –Cutthroat fishing has been good on the eastern side of the Peninsula. Delia’s Conehead Squid is a constant producer and the Miyawaki Beach Popper is one of our favorites for top water action.

LAKES

LOWLAND LAKES –Most all lowland lakes are now open with the exception of Lake Crescent (June 1st).  Good chironomid hatches in the spring will transition into Damselfly and Mayfly hatches when if the weather warms.

ALPINE LAKES –Not quite yet…it would help if Spring would arrive.  We usually start seeing open water on some lakes as early as May.  Others might not be until July.
