New for 2017. We’ve assembled our top two winter steelhead picks for the avid angler looking to hit the water without having to wade through the muddy confusion associated with today’s world of Spey. We’ve done our best to simplify your process of deciding which rod and what line. With the correct balance of grains and running line, The Redington Chromer spey rod coupled with the Redington Behemoth reel is a great launching pad for any angler looking for a premo winter steelhead package ready to fish.

CHROMER 8126 This is a hot stick perfect for tighter quarters or smaller rivers. We opt for the 12ft 6inch rods on smaller rivers or anywhere there might be tight brushy areas. We use the 8126 for rivers like the Klickitat, WA. Or North Umpqua, OR. or one of our many coastal rivers here on the OP. We have fished the 8126 personally and can testify to its surprising ability to chuck lines at impressive speeds and distance. Good news is if you find yourself fishing a larger river you won’t feel completely undergunned.

  • Redington – 8126 Chromer 12′ 6″
  • Redington – Behemoth Reel 9/10
  • RIO – Skagit Max 575gr
  • OPST – Lazar Running Line – 40lb
  • Rio- T-8 10ft
  • Backing – 150 yrds 30lb

CHROMER 8136   This is our ultimate winter steelhead rod. The 13ft 6 inch length goes to work for you on a mess of big n’ nasty intruders and burly sink tips, (because of the length) greater mending capabilities and of course, will cast further than the shorter 8126. If you plan on fishing larger rivers in places like B.C, on the Hoh river, WA. or if you might find yourself dredging for fall Chinook in a heavily glaciated or muddy run off river than the 8136 has the leverage and knuckle to get it done right!

  • Redington – 8136 Chromer 13′ 6″
  • Redington – Behemoth Reel 9/10
  • RIO – Skagit Max Long 575gr
  • OPST – Lazar Running Line – 40lb
  • Rio – T-8 10ft
  • Backing – 150 yrds 30lb

Package comes ready to fish. We spool everything on so all you have to do is attach the reel to the rod, run the line through the guides and tie on a fly.

Rio InTouch MOW T-8 / 10ft – Sink Tip

Your winter steelhead package comes with one 10ft T-8 sink tip. This is a powerful level sink tip designed to cast the biggest flies with ease. T-8 is the lightest full-sink tip of the MOW series.

We gave you the lightest sink tip so you can get to fishing without getting hung up on bottom. If you would like a complete sink tip set that will enable you to fish top to bottom or if this is your first sink tip wallet, see below for the basic setup that we carry anytime we are on the water.

  • Float (we rarely use the float but it may be necessary for 1 – 3ft really shallow and or really slow water at or near the hang down)
  • Included in the Chromer Package: T-8 (6-7ips) (mostly used in 3-5 ft of A typical swing water or for inside seem in faster water at or near the hang down )
  • T-11 (7-8ips) (Mostly used in about 5 ft of A type steelhead holding water, runs or buckets. T-11, being the middle child, will serve most steelhead fishing situations.)
  • T-14 (8-9ips) (The heavy boy. Commonly used in 5ft or greater depths and or in faster swing water or anytime you need to slow the fly down to a slow drag. T-14 is used quite a bit in periods of high/dirty water where you need to get the fly down to fish level and to keep the fly moving slowly throw the pool. Because of the heavy weight of the T-14 tip there is lot of drag in the water thus slowing down your presentation long enough for steelhead to see the fly.)

The MOW full-sink tips also come in two lengths 10ft or 12ft… Don’t get hung up on sink tip length, just keep it simple and stick to one recommended length for all your MOW tips. *IF you have a mixture of different lengths you’ll have to change your casting stroke every time you change a tip and the sink rates will be hard to predict.* So, until you develop a preference or when you begin to see the need for different lengths just keep it real simple. Don’t be that guy that has 20 different tips and isn’t sure which one to use and when to use it. So look at our recommendation, find out if you need a 10 ft or 12 ft then keep it simple.

  • We opt for the 10 ft sink tips for rods under 13′ or for smaller tight quarter rivers.
  • We opt for the 12 ft sink tips for rods over 13′ or for larger broad rivers.
  • If in doubt, just stick to 10ft and you cant go wrong. Simple 🙂
