FLY TYING CLASSES

Updated 1/2/17

For most of these classes, very little to no experience is required, and materials and tools can be provided with advanced notice. All of our classes are geared towards what actually works here on the Olympic Peninsula. If you’re new to tying, take a look at the Olympic Peninsula Fly Tying Course. If you’re looking for a new challenge or want to learn something new, check out one of our more advanced classes like Classic Flies with Sean Dahlquist!

Don’t forget to swing by the shop on Saturdays @1pm for a FREE fly tying demo! (Returning in February 2017) There’s also an awesome farmers market just 2 short blocks away so you can have a nice day in Downtown Port Angeles!

Grab 3 or more friends and we will be happy to put together and host a class for you. We can provide tools, materials, or just instruct. Call or email to inquire.

Some classes we have done in the past:

  • Winter Intruders
  • Traditional Spey Flies
  • Sea Run Cutt Classics

SEAN DAHLQUIST FLY TYING COURSE

Sean is one of the most accomplished fly tiers we have ever met at this early stage in life. His flies are pieces of art work that are impeccably tied with dedication to detail and creativity. He is a traditionalist with materials, preferring to use real seals fur, polar bear, blue-eared pheasant, McNeese hooks, Lagartun tinsels and other premium materials for his creations. We’re very excited to have him host this fly tying course, and we’re confident that those who take it will be getting a real bargain and an experience they’ll never forget.

Sean’s class will focus on classic spey flies that are both beautiful and effective for summer run steelhead. Each session, Sean will lead the group in tying 3 flies per class. The first will be wet flies, the second hairwings, and the third spey flies. Due to the complexity of the flies being tied, some experience is preferred. Beginners should look at taking ”Olympic Peninsula Fly Tying Course” before taking this class.

All hooks and materials will be provided.spectral spider

Tools you will need are:

  • Vice
  • Bobin & thread
  • Scissors (serrated preferably)
  • Hackle pliers
  • Whip finisher
  • Hair stacker
  • Head cement.

Session 1 – Burlap, Knudsen’s Spider, Spectral Spider,

Session 2 –  Polar Shrimp, Green Butt Skunk, Drain’s 20

Session 3 –  Sol Duc, Orange and Pink Spey, and possible a marabou spey if the first two don’t take too long

You can sign up for one class or sign up for them all, but we strongly suggest signing up for all three as techniques are built on starting from class 1, and joining just the last class can result in one person being behind.  To help you get there, we’re offering all three classes at a bundled discount price of $195 or $75 for individual classes. All materials are included making this a huge bargain.

DATES TO BE DETERMINED. We can always put on a class for groups of 3+ people by request.
